Interview with Matthew
PazCastillo
Where are you from?
My mother is Italian and my father is Colombian,
and I live in New York.
Tell us your latest news?
Don’t really have any [I’m boring, I
know].
When and why did you begin writing?
Some time in January 2005. I don’t really
remember why I started. I guess I just began putting down some
of my thoughts on paper.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
This might sound weird, but I don’t really
consider myself a “writer”. I mean, I think of myself
as someone who writes, but I don’t really have this perception
of myself as an author.
How has your environment/upbringing colored
your writing?
I’m not sure that it has. Except maybe that
I don’t really make a big issue out of the fact that my
characters are gay. I don’t really address issues of being
in the closet or hiding one’s sexual orientation. I live
in New York, so being openly gay isn’t a problem in my life.
Do you have a specific writing style?
Not really. At least, I don’t think so. I’ve
been accused of using more big words than are actually necessary
at times.
What genre are you most comfortable writing?
To be honest, I think I mostly like writing about
relationships dealing with people in their early twenties.
How did you come up with the title for your
story(s)?
That’s a good question. Now that I think about
it, I’m not sure. In the case of a story like ‘Unrequited’,
I chose the title because the story deals with having feelings
for someone who doesn’t necessarily like you back. But not
all my titles are necessarily indicative of the contents of the
story.
Is there a message in your story that you
want readers to grasp?
Nope. My stories don’t contain any special
messages.
How much of your stories are realistic?
I’m sure there are some who would argue that
they aren’t realistic at all. I don’t mind that because,
after all, I do write fiction.
Are experiences based on someone you know,
or events in your life?
Nah.
What are you reading now?
This is gonna sound strange, but I haven’t
really had time to read anything as of late. Too much partying.
What are your current projects?
Partying.
Do you see writing as a long- or short-term
career?
I really like writing. I don’t really see
myself stopping anytime soon. I can’t say for sure what
will happen as far as posting what I write and sharing it on the
internet. It’s all dependent on how much time I have to
devote to it. Real life tends to intrude and takes priority over
everything else. But at this point, I don’t have any plans
to stop.
